The Society for the Study of Africana Philosophy ("SSAP"), based in New York City, has been a forum for the discussion of philosophical ideas for over thirty years. SSAP was established to provide a network of support for young African American philosophers and other intellectuals in the academy, to bring together alternative voices to de-center the predominant 'Eurocentric' focus of and lack of diversity in most academic philosophy departments, and to provide a place for lay intellectuals to exchange ideas with professional academics in an informal setting.

Next Meeting

Date: Sunday, May 19, 2013

Time: 1:30 P.M.

Where: Al Prettyman's, 215 W. 98th Street, 12B

Presenter/Topic: Dr. David E. McClean (Lecturer in Philosophy, Rutgers (Newark) and Molloy College

Topic: "The Audacious Turn"

Summary of Topic: The focus on "struggle" has been both apt and enlightening as a central theme of Africana philosophy. But should "struggle" remain the guiding notion of the work of those engaged in Africana philosophy(ies) into the future? I will suggest that there is a need to move from "struggle" to, perhaps, "audacity" as the/a  central theme of our philosophizing, even as the "struggle" continues, as "audacity," a term of hope, expectation and determination, envelopes "struggle" within itself. What would an "audacious turn" in Africana philosophy look like? How might it be different from "liberation philosophies" of various types? Would there be a difference that makes a difference? The goal of this presentation is not to answer all of these questions or other questions that may be raised, but to stimulate a discussion as to whether  "the audacious turn" might be a useful next step when doing philosophy in relation to "the black experience" broadly construed, especially as such philosophizing purports to relate to real conditions and real experiences in the world.
